On February 14, 1776, just across the river from where I now sit, Thomas Paine wrote an introduction to a new version to Common Sense. In it he said that the cause of America is the cause of all mankind. A place where the oppressed from all around the world could find freedom. Freedom to think, freedom to speak, and the freedom to be a small time merchant, farmer, or trader and be in control of your own destiny.

Seeing the way we are currently treating people looking to America for a new chance at life for themselves and their families is disheartening. Seeing that we are more interested in extracting oil and minerals from countries around the world than helping the people of those countries overthrow domestic tyranny and the intervention of foreign multinational corporations is disgusting.

Let us return to the words (not the deeds) of the people who dreamt of a world where human rights were the gifts that we gave each other regardless of our bloodlines, our religious beliefs, or the languages that we speak.
