Over 2000 years ago, Sophocles told us the world was full of wonders, but nothing so wonderful and so terrible as man. We are capable of so much, but if we don't have internal and external restraints, we can be the source of the worst actions that occur on this planet.

This has never been more true than in our present climate where nations and corporations are using our scientific knowledge to create ever more terrifying weapons while at the same time allowing international organizations and international norms to be ignored or obliterated.

This week's story from Al Jazeera about the use of prohibited thermobaric weapons against Palestinians is alarming both for the actual use against civilians and for what it portends for other populations around the globe in the near future.

Like all Greek tragedies, the present action is foreshadowing a very spectacular downfall, and we are unable to recognize our faults, change our present trajectory, or protect our children from our own hubris.
