More than 50 years ago, Rachel Carson did her best to wake the country up to what we were doing to our environment. There is no doubt that she was successful in getting Americans from all parts of the political spectrum to understand the dangers that unchecked capitalism posed to the environment.

We are now rushing headlong into the same mindset that was exhibited before the release of her book. I have to admit that with all the other problems that are coming at us every day, it is very easy to fall into a trap of "despair and defeatism". Collectively, we are Sisyphus and we have spent generations straining to push the rock up the hill and, as it slips away from us and heads back to the base of the mountain, we are seeing hundreds of other rocks moving in the same direction.

I would like to think a modern day Rachel Carson will come along and give us the wisdom and strength to start this movement all over again, but I feel like the powers of propaganda will never allow her message to get the traction it requires. I hate feeling this way, I just don't see any possible path forward.
