Will Bunch of the Philadelphia Inquirer is often right on the mark, but his column in today's paper requires special attention. He reminds us that even though there are so many other issues we are focusing on, we can't allow ourselves to become numb to what is happening in Latin America. Not only are we killing hundreds of innocent men in small fishing boats, but now we are about to amplify this by repeating it, writ large, on land in areas around Latin America.
Archbishop Romero tells us that it is easy to lose all sensitivity when our consciences are overwhelmed with cruelty and death. But in situations like this, it is more important than ever to "go on repeating, even if we are a voice crying in the wilderness, 'No to violence, yes to peace'." "No a la violencia, sí a la paz!"
