Rachel Carson is often credited with helping to wake Americans up to the environmental damage that was being done to the planet in the name of progress. One of the things she tried to get people to understand is that, in the long run, the destruction of a species' habitat is worse than direct killing. This is why, for more than 50 years, significant modification or degradation of habitat was included in the definition of harm.

Of course, those with more money than they could ever use in life feel their freedoms are being infringed upon by regulations that prevent them from destroying the environment. So the only logical move is for the Trump administration to rescind that definition and put thousands of endangered species at risk of extinction.
