In 1826, Mary Shelley told us that books were an indispensable component in the development of our faculties. Rose Horowitch echoed the same theme in yesterday's Atlantic (link here), but also warned us that the number of people reading books is in free fall.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know I would not be the same person I am today without my "extensive acquaintance with books". In fact, I share these quotes because I am hoping that some of the quotes will resonate with people in such a way that they will seek out the book or the author that I was quoting.
