In 1918, W.E.B DuBois wrote that "great and civilized nations were making desperate endeavors to confine the development of ability and individuality to one sex". He couldn't understand why anyone would want to sideline the talents, abilities, and potential contributions of half of the nation. He was further astounded that they were doing the same thing to all non-white races.
