I have never taken this quote by Albert Camus literally. I have always interpreted it as an allegory for things like the genocide in Gaza. I took it to imply that we always should align ourselves with the victims and never find justifications for supporting a government that is killing civilians.

But now, thanks to prediction markets, we have people that are literally betting on the side of the pestilence. We would assume they are hoping that their bets will pay off and we are hoping that they will not be taking actions to help make a pandemic more likely in an effort to make money.
