This weekend saw, "Rededicate 250: A jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving" descend on the National Mall in Washington. Many of the speakers have claimed that America was founded as a Christian nation and the event drew speeches and readings from many top Republicans, including the president and vice-president.
But if we go back 250 years and read the words of those who helped shape the founding of this country, we find a contradictory message. Today's quote comes from Thomas Paine in early 1776. He wrote that this type of event, "mingling religion with politics" should be "disavowed and reprobated by every inhabitant of America". So here I am disavowing and reprobating the event and every politician and speaker who tried to mix religion and politics.
