In 1951, Rachel Carson beautifully reminded us that although there were no people around at the birth of the solar system, "the stars and the moon and the rocks were there". So by learning to read the evidence from "the earth's most ancient rocks" as well as those found on the moon, we are able to start to piece together the story of the beginning of our planet and the life that inhabits it. She also told us not to overlook the "hints contained in the history of the sun and the whole universe of star-filled space".
Seven years after these words were written, NASA and Cal Tech formed a partnership to expand the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) into one of the greatest jewels in the crown that was known as the United States government. No other entity has done as much to piece together the story Rachel Carson was deeply interested in learning.
Now it looks like that partnership has a real chance of coming to an end. I hope that those who are opening the door to this change have the best interest in science in mind. However, with everything else that has been happening in our country, I can't help but worry that this institution will fall under the control of a billionaire like Elon Musk or get destroyed as it is contracted out to a new company founded by Don Jr. and Eric.
I urge you to keep your eye on the moves made around the JPL and if it becomes necessary, defend this institution with whatever power is at your disposal as an American citizen.
