It was great to see the pope so clearly apologize for the role that the Catholic Church played in legitimizing slavery. Richard Wright reminds us that the countries of Europe "could not have built nations on so vast a scale had they not shut their eyes to the humanity of other men". The church of the time understood that but the popes also had dreams of wealth on a vast scale and thus they ignored the central message of the new testament.
I have no doubt that those at the top of our modern industrialized world, whether in the current administration or in positions of corporate leadership, are ruled by the same mindset. Regardless of how much they profess to be devote Christians, they demonstrate time and time again the willingness to shut their eyes to the humanity of other men in order to accumulate wealth on the grandest scale possible.
